  • Discovering the energy inefficiencies in the production process of Productos Alimenticios Gallo with the aim of carrying out actions that allow improving the productivity of the plant and addressing the company's concern regarding its environmental responsibility.
Challenges
  • Obtaining highly specific information on the exact energy costs according to various variables of the manufacturing process (per unit manufactured, per line, etc.) in a contextualized manner (by time of year, according to speed and quantity of production, etc.) to carry out reliable comparisons that allow close monitoring of improvements.
  • The technological architecture had to be scalable: the project starts with the measurement and analysis of the electrical consumption of the plant and adjoining facilities, but from the beginning, the plan is to include other energy areas (thermal energy, gas, etc.) to create an efficient management environment.
Result
  • Pastas Gallo today has a complete data history on production and facility consumption, being able to perform comparative analyses to initiate improvement processes, or to measure the impact of corrective actions already underway and verify their positive impact on reducing energy expenditure.
  • For the first time, the company has information on its energy consumption in a way that is related to the production processes that have caused it.

Pastas Gallo is a Spanish company that is a leader in the national food retail market. Its creation dates back to 1955, when José Espona, an entrepreneur and owner of a flour mill that supplied the Gallo brand, acquired the company, introducing durum wheat semolina pasta to Spain, a manufacturing variant of flour pasta that was discovered in Italy and has proven to be much more effective given its quality for commercialization.

Today, the company offers a wide variety of products related to the world of pasta—dry pasta, fresh pasta, sauces, flours, etc.—both to the national market and internationally. In fact, Pastas Gallo exports 12% of its production to 32 countries on four continents, with a total turnover in 2009 of 215 million euros. The Middle East, Africa, China and Latin America are its traditional destinations, to which it now adds the emerging markets of Central Europe as a new business objective.
