{"id":59122,"date":"2025-09-26T10:43:42","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/blog\/critical-failure-in-rockwell-plcs\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T10:43:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:43:42","slug":"critical-failure-in-rockwell-plcs","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/en\/blog\/critical-failure-in-rockwell-plcs\/","title":{"rendered":"Critical Failure in Rockwell PLCs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">2 <strong>new vulnerabilities<\/strong> have been discovered in <strong>Rockwell PLCs<\/strong> as well as in the <strong>software<\/strong> of the engineering workstations that can be exploited to inject malicious code and inadvertently affect automation processes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to Claroty, the failure can affect <strong>industrial operations<\/strong> and cause damage in a similar way as <strong>Stuxnet<\/strong> did in its day:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cProcess logics and predefined variables drive the automation process. A change in any of them can alter the <strong>normal operations of the PLCs<\/strong> and the processes it controls,\u201d said Sharon Brizinow of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/claroty.com\/2022\/03\/31\/blog-research-hiding-code-on-rockwell-automation-plcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claroty<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>vulnerabilities<\/strong> have been classified as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ics\/advisories\/icsa-22-090-05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2022-1161<\/a><\/strong> (CVSS score: 10): A remotely exploitable failure allows an attacker to write to program code in a memory position separate from the compiled code (bytecode). The problem lies in the PLC firmware that runs on Rockwell&#8217;s ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and GuardLogix systems. <\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/uscert\/ics\/advisories\/icsa-22-090-07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CVE-2022-1159<\/strong><\/a> (CVSS score: 7.7): An attacker with administrator access on the engineering workstation with Studio 5000 Logix Designer, can intercept the compilation process and inject code into the program transparently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">A successful exploitation of these weaknesses allows an attacker to <strong>modify the process logics<\/strong> and download malicious code to the PLCs and affect the operation, allowing anomalous commands to be sent to the physical devices that control these PLCs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The result is that while the engineer thinks that the PLC has been programmed correctly, <strong>malicious code<\/strong> is
