{"id":59125,"date":"2025-09-26T10:43:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/blog\/example-of-using-a-cybersecurity-standard-applying-iec62443-in-aveva-system-platform-environments\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T10:43:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:43:43","slug":"example-of-using-a-cybersecurity-standard-applying-iec62443-in-aveva-system-platform-environments","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/en\/blog\/example-of-using-a-cybersecurity-standard-applying-iec62443-in-aveva-system-platform-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"Example of Using a Cybersecurity Standard: Applying IEC62443 in Aveva System Platform Environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\">In this post, we will see how <strong>cybersecurity standards<\/strong> can help us define our path to <strong>protect communication infrastructures<\/strong> from various potential threats that may occur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">To do this, we will use part of the standards defined in <strong>IEC 62443<\/strong>, the de facto standard for the protection of industrial environments and ICS automation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">As an introduction to the standard, I recommend reading this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciberseguridadlogitek.com\/desmontando-la-iec-62443\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry<\/a><\/strong> where the basic concepts, protection levels, and fundamental cybersecurity requirements are explained.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Specifically, the <strong>IEC62443-3-3<\/strong> document explains in detail the different security controls to be implemented for each of the fundamental requirements (FR) and for each target security level (SL-T).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/tabla-estandar.jpg\" alt=\"standard table Aveva Cybersecurity\" width=\"900\" height=\"718\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17795\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Summarizing and providing practical examples of these <strong>countermeasures in a SCADA environment<\/strong>, we obtain the following table of protection measures that we can adopt for each of the security levels:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/tabla-SCADA.jpg\" alt=\"SCADA environments table\" width=\"643\" height=\"708\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17796\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><b>Step 1: Identify Zones and Conduits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">The <strong>first step<\/strong> is to understand the installation to be protected:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li2\">What zones do I have? What processes do I have? Which are the most critical?  <\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Which are the equipment that support the process? How do they communicate? <\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">What are the communication flows between zones?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">Is it updated?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">What threats do I have?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li2\">What are the levels of protection that I need? (being realistic vs. the investment to be made) <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">It is usually a good idea to carry out <strong>cybersecurity audits<\/strong> that provide a realistic picture of the current state of the environment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><b>Step 2: Network Segmentation Design<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\">The network architecture will determine the ease or difficulty of applying many of the recommended security controls. <strong>There is no \u201ccorrect\u201d or \u201cincorrect\u201d network architecture<\/strong>, but the standard does offer us a set of models that can help us define a topology that is modular and scalable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span>In the initial architecture, <strong>IT is perfectly separated from OT<\/strong>, and the industrial part is <strong>segmented into several levels:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><strong>Level 3.5:<\/strong> DMZ where the services that will be accessible from non-process zones that require data for decision-making are hosted. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Level 3:<\/strong> server area, global supervision, and production management. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Level 1-2:<\/strong> network distribution area to the different process zones. This level is likely to be further segmented depending on the size, number of processes, etc.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Level 0:<\/strong> process with its field buses. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/IT-OT.png\" alt=\"IT OT network architecture\" width=\"468\" height=\"798\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17797\"><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Step 3: Definition of countermeasures to implement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">Depending on the desired security level <strong>(SL-T)<\/strong> and the achieved level <strong>(SL-A)<\/strong>, more or fewer countermeasures will be applied to increase the level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>countermeasures<\/strong> to be applied can be of various kinds: technical, administrative, physical, legal, etc.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3><span>SL-T = 1 <\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span>DMZ as a front-end for remote access (Intouch Access Anywhere Secure Gateway, Insight Secure Link, Remote Desktop Services Gateway, etc.) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Segmentation of level 3 network according to the objective: development subnet, supervision subnet, and Aveva server subnet <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Segmentation of process zones: Safety, critical process subnet <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Installation of Firewalls for the control of incoming and outgoing communications from each subnet. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Application WhiteListing installation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/grafico-4.png\" alt=\"graphic countermeasures to apply\" width=\"465\" height=\"860\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17798\"><\/p>\n<h3><span>SL-T = 2 <\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Infrastructure subnet with account management, log, and backup servers <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Addition of sensors for the analysis and profiling of network traffic to detect anomalies in communications (NIDS) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A centralized server for antivirus management is added in the DMZ <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>A centralized server for controlled distribution of security patches is added in the DMZ <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Antimalware is added to the main servers. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/SLT-2.png\" alt=\"SLT-2 countermeasures scheme\" width=\"452\" height=\"860\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17800\"><\/p>\n<h3><span>SL-T = 3<br \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>To increase the security level, the following is added: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>GPS time server in the infrastructure zone. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span><span>Mobile and tablet management server (MDM). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>SIEM server for the correlation and detection of cybersecurity events. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Automated PLC\/SCADA backup server. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Use of VPN with two-factor authentication. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Industrial communications hub with secure protocols (OPC-UA) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Step 4: Maintenance and adaptation to new needs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>threats, vulnerabilities<\/strong>, processes, technologies, people, etc. change over time, and with it, cybersecurity risks increase if nothing is done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">To maintain the <strong>security levels<\/strong> achieved, we must not forget to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design our industrial network and its components in a redundant way to guarantee the high availability of all the components that enable the process.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor the systems for early detection of possible anomalies.<\/li>\n<li>Have a disaster recovery plan to be able to react and correct any anomaly in an efficient manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">In this way, we see how <strong>cybersecurity standards, such as IEC62443,<\/strong> help us to structure and define how to address cybersecurity in a holistic way.
