{"id":59826,"date":"2025-09-26T10:54:24","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/blog\/a-new-solution-to-prevent-supply-chain-attacks-and-ensure-the-integrity-of-the-firmware-software-installed-in-ot-critical-environments\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T10:54:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T10:54:35","slug":"a-new-solution-to-prevent-supply-chain-attacks-and-ensure-the-integrity-of-the-firmware-software-installed-in-ot-critical-environments","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/becolve.com\/en\/blog\/a-new-solution-to-prevent-supply-chain-attacks-and-ensure-the-integrity-of-the-firmware-software-installed-in-ot-critical-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"A new solution to prevent \u201cSupply Chain Attacks\u201d and ensure the integrity of the firmware\/software installed in OT \/ Critical environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.3&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>It was in November 2014 when we published this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciberseguridadlogitek.com\/como-afecta-dragonfly-los-sistemas-scada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entry<\/a> in which we explained how the <strong>APT Dragonfly<\/strong> had been able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Access the firmware download areas<\/strong> of the companies <strong>Mesa Imaging<\/strong> (supplier of cameras used for guided vehicle vision in industrial environments), eWon and MB Connect (suppliers of solutions for remote access and remote maintenance of industrial environments).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modify the legitimate software\/firmware<\/strong> (mainly drivers) and the certificates issued by the manufacturers, including a malicious malware (a Trojan in particular) in the firmware.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Provide users with access<\/strong> to this \u201cmodified\u201d firmware, so that the infection was carried out through the download and installation of said illegitimate firmware.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The cunning of the <strong>APT group<\/strong>, together with, probably, the absence of procedures and systems that would allow comparing <strong>the original Hash function<\/strong> provided by the manufacturer with the one that would be obtained after downloading the firmware, caused different companies in the pharmaceutical, food, beverage and water sectors to be infected.<\/p>\n<p>This type of attack, known as <strong>\u201cSupply Chain Attack\u201d<\/strong>, is becoming more common. In fact, in the latest report published by ENISA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enisa.europa.eu\/publications\/enisa-threat-landscape-report-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(ENISA Landscape 2018)<\/a>, this type of threat is mentioned on several occasions. <\/p>\n<p>With the aim of preventing this type of attack, the founder of <strong>Tofino Eric Byres<\/strong>, in collaboration with the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) has created a new company called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adolus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adolus<\/a> that has developed a solution called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adolus.com\/meet-sta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FACT (Framework for Analysis and Coordinated Trust).<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>How Does FACT Work?<\/h4>\n<p>In summary, FACT works like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Manufacturers that develop software or devices that contain firmware\/software <strong>subscribe to the aDolus service<\/strong> (through the FACT solution).<\/li>\n<li>Companies (end users) that use this software\/devices <strong>can validate new software patches and updates<\/strong> before installing them on critical equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The following figure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adolus.com\/how-it-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accessible here,<\/a> summarizes how FACT works.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28441 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Basic-STA-Data-flow_cropped.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"390\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A)<\/u> <em><u>Vendors create a Digital Fingerprint<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>manufacturers certified by Adolus<\/strong> create a \u201cdigital fingerprint\u201d of the legitimate software\/firmware they have developed. The transfer of this <strong>\u201cdigital fingerprint\u201d<\/strong> is carried out through an encrypted communication to the Adolus server. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28443 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/vendor1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"269\"><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>B) <\/u><em><u>FACT verifies the authenticity of the firmware\/software<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within <strong>FACT<\/strong>, the authenticity of the files sent is verified and saved in what is called <strong>\u201cTrust Repository\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From the Trust Repository<\/strong>, we proceed to analyze and understand in depth the sub-components of the software and whether it contains vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28445 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/vendor2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"344\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>C) <em>The \u201cAsset Owner\u201d checks the integrity of the firmware\/software they want to install.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within FACT, the user downloads the firmware\/software that they want to incorporate\/update in their critical or production environment in the usual way (DVD, download, ISO, etc.).<br \/>With the downloaded firmware\/software, they access FACT and, with the client tool, create their own \u201cdigital fingerprinting\u201d of said firmware\/software.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D) <em>FACT carries out the comparison between both Digital Fingerprints<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FACT compares the manufacturer&#8217;s <strong>digital fingerprint<\/strong> (located in the Trust Repository) with the digital fingerprinting generated by the user.<br \/>If they match, <strong>the software\/firmware is legitimate<\/strong>, otherwise, it has been modified or altered. In addition, FACT provides a score of the degree of security of the firmware\/software, providing an analysis of the main vulnerabilities found. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28448 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FACT.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"470\"><\/p>\n<h4>Do You Want to See an Example?<\/h4>\n<p>Below, we can see an example of how this <strong>flow is carried out in Adolus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A user has to update the firmware of a <strong>Rockwell PLC.<\/strong> They are provided with this file \u201cPN-85386.bin\u201d for this purpose. Is it reliable? <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28451 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/PLC-rockwell.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"308\"><\/p>\n<p>2. In <strong>FACT<\/strong> it is observed that the file has a certificate issued by the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28453 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FACT2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"305\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28455 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FACT4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"282\"><\/p>\n<p>3. In the following case, it is observed that <strong>the firmware that is to be analyzed<\/strong> is composed of sub-modules that contain specific vulnerabilities, and its installation is not recommended.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28464 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FIRMAWARE.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"285\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28476 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FIRMWARE2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"543\" height=\"277\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-28478 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/FIRMWARE3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"412\"><\/p>\n<p>Without a doubt, <strong>consulting\/engineering firms have an excellent solution<\/strong> to ensure that the software\/firmware that is deployed in critical environments has not been manipulated. In parallel, it is absolutely necessary to have a control model in which specific policies and procedures have been designed and written that standardize the way of working when it is necessary to
