It was part of an anonymous questionnaire that we distributed at the end of each event, with the purpose of identifying <strong>technological needs and improvements for the management and exploitation of information in real time<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>How do you manage the creation of backups for the programming environments of field devices (PLCs, Robots, RTUs) and SCADA Systems?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I create copies using Change Management Systems.<\/li>\n<li>I create manual copies.<\/li>\n<li>I use Acronis-type systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6337\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/pregunta-sistemas-gestion-cambio-logitek-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"795\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>From these, we can infer the following conclusions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The creation of backups<\/strong> of the programming environments of field devices (PLCs, Robots, RTUs) and SCADA systems <strong>is a cross-cutting problem for any industrial or infrastructure sector<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A large majority of <strong>organizations perform this practice manually<\/strong> (76%) <strong>or<\/strong> <strong>using IT solutions<\/strong> (Acronis type) adapted to the OT environment (3%).<\/li>\n<li>What <strong>is not reflected in this survey is the number of organizations that do not have designed and\/or implemented procedures<\/strong> and systems that allow them to carry out the creation of these backups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6358\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gestion-cambios-logitek-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"795\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>What do we at Logitek propose for the management of backups of programming environments or field devices?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As our expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/%C3%A0ngel-f-2aa4738b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00c1ngel Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, <strong><em>Solution Manager of the High Availability and Industrial Cybersecurity areas of Logitek<\/em><\/strong>, mentioned during his intervention at the <strong>Wonderware Digital Transformation Day<\/strong>, the context of operation in which backups and version management of field device programs (PLC, RTU, DCS) and SCADA\/HMI systems are carried out is as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>There are different external and internal agents that carry out changes in the configuration of the different field devices:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Engineering carries out improvements in production processes.<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance performs preventive or corrective actions on field devices.<\/li>\n<li>Operation executes version changes, interfaces, configuration depending on the product, batch\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Administration assigns privileges and manages the system comprehensively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Situations arise, such as those described below, that hinder the optimal management of backups:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Heterogeneity in update procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Deletion of the file without a backup or without the latest version.<\/li>\n<li>Absence of modification comments.<\/li>\n<li>Changes without the possibility of going back.<\/li>\n<li>No visibility or traceability of changes made.<\/li>\n<li>Uncontrolled simultaneity of actors with access to the programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The following consequences occur:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of industrial productivity.<\/li>\n<li>Increase in non-productive time.<\/li>\n<li>Underutilization of available resources.<\/li>\n<li>Increase in mean time to repair.<\/li>\n<li>Variation in the homogeneity and quality of the products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6361\" src=\"https:\/\/becolve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gestion-cambios-logitek-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"795\" height=\"300\"><\/p>\n<p>Taking this context into account, at <strong>Logitek<\/strong> we believe that the <strong>incorporation of Change Management Systems increases the availability and fault tolerance of field devices and real-time systems, reducing the MTTR (Mean Time to Repair).<\/strong> In particular, these systems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce <strong>identification, access, and authorization control<\/strong> to the programs (under user and password).<\/li>\n<li>Offer a <strong>server as a common repository<\/strong> for PLC programs.<\/li>\n<li>Offer <strong>native management of versions<\/strong> of PLC programs.<\/li>\n<li>Perform <strong>comparisons between the programs loaded<\/strong> in the PLCs and those saved in a central repository.<\/li>\n<li>Provide the <strong>functionality to perform automatic backups<\/strong> of PLC programs.<\/li>\n<li>Allow for <strong>traceability of the users<\/strong> who modify the programs.<\/li>\n<li>Allow for the <strong>sending of alarm emails<\/strong> with the results of the comparisons.<\/li>\n<li>Help to create <strong>specific reports associated with the operation<\/strong> of the Change Management System itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the next few days, we are going
