In our article \u201cThe Smart City: From the Factory to the City\u201d<\/a> we talked about what smart cities<\/strong> and the inevitable internet of things meant to us, and we did so without technicalities or unnecessary voluptuousness: let’s not forget that the end user is the citizen and does not have to know these technicalities. We also did it because we understand that the smart city is a logical continuation of the city itself, by applying technologies traditionally linked to other sectors in order to improve and make the city more efficient<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

If you have visited our website and read other articles, such as our success story for AENA<\/a>, the Valdespartera neighborhood<\/a> in Zaragoza, or the new irrigation system for parks and gardens in Barcelona<\/a>, you will also know that we use the open platform Wonderware to centralize data from thousands of sensors and easily manage them from a single point and in real time, regardless of the manufacturer of those sensors or the systems previously installed.<\/p>\n

Well, the purpose of this post is to announce that we are now incorporating an important improvement to our usual technological deployment: we are adding SIGFOX technology to Wonderware<\/strong>, in order to structure the transmission of information from the sensors to the information management platform. And what’s new about this? Nothing new, but the optimization that is achieved is such that nothing will ever be the same again<\/strong>. Any project to implement smart paradigms in the city will from now on be much more efficient<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

What was the problem until now in Smart City projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The development of the Smart Cities<\/strong> is linked to the development of the Internet of Things. Providing technology to cities facilitates not only communication between their inhabitants, but also connectivity between machines and devices through the Internet. <\/p>\n

In 2008, the number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded the number of inhabitants of the planet for the first time, and it is expected that in the coming years the number of connected devices will triple the world’s population<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This dizzying evolution of communications via the Internet is facilitating the generation and access to a huge amount of data on the life and routines of its inhabitants, as well as data from the operation of urban services and infrastructures, and is even favoring the creation of new economic activities.<\/p>\n

But each sensor needs power and coverage for its communication. The problem that many cities face<\/strong> is the energy expenditure, maintenance (battery replacement) and coverage of the hundreds of thousands of distributed sensors.<\/p>\n

What is our solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our solution is the use of a new communication protocol<\/strong>. There are several advantages: <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Facilitates communications over very long distances<\/li>\n
  2. It does not require deploying repeaters or base stations in the city, as well as other communication infrastructures such as radio, wifi…<\/li>\n
  3. Low cost in its implementation<\/li>\n
  4. Enormous energy saving<\/li>\n
  5. Very significant savings in maintenance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This new communication solution confers Logitek as a benchmark in global solutions for the smart city or Smart City<\/strong>, from the platform for the management of information from infrastructures and services in real time, to the connectivity between machines and devices through the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n
