The climate of Barcelona, where water is a rather scarce resource, makes it necessary to have irrigation systems for its green areas. In this context, plans to optimize irrigation and reduce water consumption, such as deactivating sprinklers on rainy days, can have a great impact, both in environmental and economic terms, allowing for sustainable management of the city’s resources and reducing the water bill.

Wonderware’s urban infrastructure management platform, in its application to smart irrigation of the city’s parks and gardens, contributes to improving efficiency by capturing information from field sensors (humidity, salinity, temperature, wind speed) and visualizing and analyzing the information obtained in real time. All of this makes it possible to control the water supply according to the water needs of each type of plant. In addition, the system is integrated into City OS, Barcelona’s cross-cutting urban management platform, facilitating future developments linked to its use in other infrastructures and services.

Savings of up to 25% have been achieved on the water bill, which amounts to savings of almost €425,000 per year.

Here is a video that illustrates this entire system and its implementation and operation in the parks and gardens of Barcelona.
