How HMI SCADA solutions enable the monitoring and control of operations anytime, anywhere

Today, HMIs/SCADAs enable efficient visualization of operations, empower operators to make informed decisions, and seamlessly scale systems.

Although 25 years ago HMI-SCADA solutions opened a world of possibilities for control engineers in the industry, the complexity of implementing projects back then was very high: programmers and developers had to create and deploy monitoring and visualization applications themselves, and integrate all the data sources that were needed.

Today, the latest generation of HMI-SCADA solutions has turned this situation around. During the AVEVA World 2023 event, our customers shared how they are leveraging the latest innovations in AVEVA InTouch HMI and AVEVA System Platform. Now, thanks to these solutions, customers can efficiently visualize their operations, empower operators to make informed decisions, and seamlessly scale their systems as their business grows.

The Revolution in HMI SCADA Solutions

There has truly been a general revolution in how HMI SCADA solutions are developed and deployed: the results are generating a significant business impact from small single-plant operations and OEM machinery manufacturers to massive multi-facility operators around the world.

Gone are the days of long wait times and complex programming. Now, this revolution, based on the decrease in the amount of code needed, allows for up to a 60% reduction in application creation time without the need for scripting. In addition, the “design once, deploy anywhere” design principle using SVG and HTML5 graphics based on responsive design results in 100% reusable content on any device and operating system.

In short, we are experiencing a massive acceleration in the time to value of projects, thanks to the fact that control engineers can now quickly provide the information that operators need about processes in real time and easily scale their systems throughout their organization.

HMI SCADA Customer Stories

This is just a small sample of the highlights from the customer presentations we saw at AVEVA World 2023:

Armstrong World Industries

The manufacturer of ceiling and wall solutions for the design and construction of commercial buildings and residential spaces shared how they leveraged the web client of AVEVA InTouch HMI to empower decision-making and ensure the digital health of their processes. Armstrong reported that after deploying the web client in 15 production processes in 6 plants – by addressing the lack of visibility of operational data in the places where it was needed, as well as IT-OT integration in a single solution – they achieved results such as a 21% reduction in changeover time and a 0.25% reduction in product waste.

Ashghal

On the other hand, Qatar’s public works authority explained how they turned AVEVA System Platform into the focal point for orchestrating many different systems, as part of their emergency response solutions in Doha. As Qatar prepared to host the FIFA World Cup, Ashghal needed to quickly integrate all commercial and OT systems using AVEVA System Platform’s GIS-aware capabilities. To do this, they developed workflows to interact with subsystems in crisis situations. The project resulted in a 42% improvement in contractor response time and a 68% reduction in active alarms. At the same time, comprehensive post-event reporting was reduced from 24 hours to less than five minutes.

“The system has contributed to the success of the event by providing a smooth transportation experience for fans, minimizing disruptions and optimizing overall traffic operations”

Abdulrahman A S Ansari – Director of RMC Operations, Ashghal.

Maple Leaf Foods

The Canadian food manufacturer is a great example of a company that continues to diligently execute its digital vision since 2016. Maple Leaf added applications on top of its existing industrial software, in order to leverage Industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT and AI for advanced analytics. By integrating the new Machine Learning (ML) applications with its AVEVA HMI/SCADA and AVEVA MES solutions, the project quickly increased gross profit by 12%, thanks to reducing waste in eight use cases.

Tetra Pak

The global food processing and packaging solutions company Tetra Pak has now adopted the model-based architecture of AVEVA’s HMI/SCADA/MES solutions. The goal: to offer a scalable proprietary solution that uses a series of templates for plant automation and information management as part of its portfolio of services for the food and beverage industry.

Genentech

Finally, the Vacaville plant of this California-based biotechnology corporation has long leveraged AVEVA System Platform and our batch management solution for its large-scale bioreactors. The scope of the new project extended this capability to laboratory bioreactors whose records were on paper. The project resulted in higher quality from the first attempt, as well as annual savings of more than $170,000 after eliminating physical tickets.

As you can see, our customers are using the latest innovations in HMI SCADA solutions to create value from the monitoring and control of their operations, keeping up with the challenges of a future that will increasingly require more agile, connected and prepared businesses.
