Intelligent Irrigation in Barcelona: We Present the New System

Today, the new smart irrigation system for parks and gardens has been presented in Barcelona, one of the world’s leading Smart Cities. And we are pleased that this is the case because we have implemented it in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council!

At the presentation we were with Cristina Vila, general director of the Water Cycle of Barcelona and the deputy mayor of Urban Habitat, Antoni Vives. Cristina pointed out that:

“…the system will optimize water consumption because it will water the appropriate amount according to weather conditions and plant needs.”

The sensors collect information on humidity, salinity, temperature, wind and several other factors that automatically regulate the amount of water through a program that can be managed through computers, smartphones and tablets. The graphical user interface is truly intuitive, as you can see in this screenshot:

Antoni Vives has remarked that with this new smart irrigation system it will be possible to save 25% of water:

“A system that will surely be implemented by many other cities in the world”

It is already running in the Parc del Centre de Poblenou, but next month it will do so in the Ciutadella and Nous Barris parks. Afterwards, it will do so in the rest of Barcelona’s parks and gardens.

Joan Puigdollers, Councilor for the Environment, highlighted that projects like this give visibility to the Smart City concept. For the realization of this project, we have carried out a first phase of consulting, which has allowed us to define the functional part, the architecture and the “look & feel”. This consultancy has allowed us to obtain a precise and firm project direction that has guaranteed the success of the hardware and software implementation phases.

Of course, we have made use of the Wonderware open platform, in addition to standard communication equipment and protocols, all to ensure perfect connectivity between all systems existing and future with an adaptability scalable to the needs of the city. In fact, the entire system of escalators and elevators will be added to this platform imminently.
