New Needs in OPC-based Communication Platforms

On the road to Industry 4.0, there are multiple challenges to solve – hyperconnection, use of analytics tools and machine learning, cybersecurity, standardization, IT&OT convergence…–, therefore, we can say without fear of being wrong that the industry is experiencing a delicate moment. The requirements are going to arrive without waiting for one to be prepared.

One of the characteristics that makes this path more complex is that it is a changing scenario, every day a new tool, a new protocol, a new way of working or a new system appears. Faced with this, a great doubt arises, what is going to prevail? One cannot afford to stand still or throw money at solutions that will not lead to anything because, much to our regret, there is not and will not be a single solution that solves all the eventualities.

Therefore, from Industrial Communications by Logitek we wanted to update our training ‘OPC-based communication platforms’ in order to cover new needs that are arising. From our daily experience with our clients, we wanted to capture in the training the problems you face, what solutions, procedures and communication architectures are prevailing in the market and why.

The core remains OPC
Today, the only protocols accepted as standards in the industrial world are OPC DA and OPC UA. So much so, that both ERP or Cloud tools – such as SAP or Azure – and the new ranges of PLCs or controllers have integrated them as a method of information exchange. Therefore, our training continues to emphasize both protocols, their advantages, their uses and their differences. In the short, medium and long term, standardization in the world of automation cannot be understood without the use of OPC.

New ways to report information
Increasingly, the classic ISA architecture allows to be interpreted in a more flexible way. For some time now, we find more than the PLC data not only interested in sending it to a ‘distant’ plant SCADA, but it is also required to report that information to transactional tools for its interpretation at a low level or as an intermediate layer for other agents of the system. How to integrate it into a classic and robust OPC architecture is one of the critical topics of the course.

Incorporation of new paradigms
It is indisputable that, in the industrial world, the IoT has burst in to stay. This goal of hyperconnectivity has imported new communication protocols from the IT world. Nowadays, you can already find instrumentation, sensors and controllers that incorporate new protocols.

Our training will address the impact and integration of these new IoT protocols, they are listed, explained and worked on in a practical way with them in the laboratories.

In summary, in the same way that products and devices are improving, our training has been updated in order to teach more and better how to solve the new problems that are appearing around us.
