What is LoRaWAN

LoRaWAN is a low-power, bidirectional wireless communication technology for transmitting a low volume of data over long distances. We detail all its advantages

LoRaWAN is a low-power, bidirectional wireless communication technology for transmitting a low volume of data over long distances.

These characteristics make it a great enabler of IoT initiatives for any type of environment, industrial, facility management, agriculture, Smart Cities, logistics, etc. Unlike other wireless communication technologies, it allows the deployment in an extensive area of a large set of devices powered by batteries in a simple and economically viable way. This type of communication is called LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network).

Why LoRaWAN?

  • Accepted as standard in the IoT ecosystem
  • Allows the use of public networks operated by third parties and the deployment of private networks
  • Battery optimization
  • Secure communications
  • A single Gateway can provide coverage to kilometers around
  • Great penetration indoors
  • Different device profiles according to need
  • It has no limitations of use, neither of sending nor of receiving information
  • Technology widely used successfully in the rest of Europe

Architecture

A typical LoRaWAN network uses an architecture where the different nodes communicate with the Gateway and it either translates the data into a conventional format or sends it to the network manager. In both cases, it is easy to integrate the information from the devices into a control or monitoring system.

What is the LoRa Alliance?

The LoRa Alliance is a non-profit technology association composed of more than 500 companies. This association aims to help disseminate and deploy IoT projects with LoRaWAN networks.

This group is the one that works on certifying and standardizing the different technologies that work with LoRaWAN in order to ensure the correct interoperability of the networks with the different devices and systems present in this environment. This allows us to guarantee that, given future eventualities, the technology will continue to be improved so that it conveniently solves the new needs that will appear in the IoT ecosystem.

Are you interested in learning more about how to use this technology in your facilities? Do not hesitate to ask us to find out how LoRaWAN can help you implement your IoT initiatives.
