Axpo Iberia – Electrical Power Generation Control

Control and operations center for distributed electrical power production
Partner:
CGI
Project objectives
Sector:
Energy
  • Monitor energy production and communication status of more than 350 distributed centers independently of generation technology.
  • Provide a technology that enables easy and rapid integration of new generation centers into the system, minimizing development and commissioning times.
Challenges
  • The volume and disparity of the facilities involved complicated the proper development of the project.
  • Similarly, the diversity of protocols (OPC XML, OPC DA, MODBUS TCP/IP, IEC 104, ICCP) was another challenge to address.
Result
  • Development and implementation of the Electrical Power Generation Control and Operations Center (CECOGEL), which exceeds 3800 MW.
  • The new infrastructure includes electrical transformation substations, real-time telemetry service, delegated dispatch and management of limitations of the Spanish Electrical System operator, REE.
  • The tool provides web access to approximately 500 users.

Axpo Iberia set itself the goal, from its beginnings in Spain and Portugal more than a decade ago, of becoming one of the main energy operators in the Iberian market, while expanding its presence in active European markets.

As a provider of customized energy services for large companies, SMEs and the self-employed, it covers the marketing of electricity and gas, energy management of producers under special arrangements and trading of electricity, biomass and CO2. In addition, it manages the largest portfolio of special regime plants in Spain, with a supply exceeding 3.5 TWh per year.

Greater Reach, Greater Responsibility

And how does a company of such magnitude maintain its facilities, which are not few, while ensuring a reliable and adequate supply? With a system and infrastructures that also measure up. Assuming an ambitious project to say the least, CGI developed the Axpo Iberia Electrical Generation Control and Operations Center (CECOGEL), as well as its infrastructure services.

The center, designed with the energy company and using the knowledge and experience of both companies, includes a delegated dispatch and real-time telemetry service for all generation facilities attached to the control center (wind farms, hydroelectric plants, solar thermal plants, photovoltaic parks, cogeneration and biomass plants) and transformer substations (SET), which total more than 3,800 MW.

Operating 24/7, it offers, in addition to the above, O&M, real-time information capture and processing, operations reports, plant status monitoring and participation in ancillary services.
