Interconnection of Industrial Networks and PLCs: Integration of Devices in Networks with Different Protocols
Interconnection of Industrial Networks and PLCs: Integration of Devices in Networks with Different Protocols
The interconnection of industrial networks has become an essential component in the industrial automation and control environment.
In this context, the ability to connect PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and devices that operate with diverse protocols is fundamental to ensuring fluid and efficient communication.
The integration of machines, devices, and PLCs into an industrial network is not a simple task, due to the multiplicity of protocols involved. Before proceeding, it is necessary to carry out a crucial preliminary task: confirm the compatibility of these devices with the industrial network into which they are to be integrated. In many cases, this compatibility may not be immediate, as the device in question may not have a variant of the required protocol.

In situations like these, the solution lies in the use of gateways. Gateways allow the conversion of the device’s protocol into the appropriate protocol for the network to which it is to be integrated. Similarly, they are useful for facilitating communication between two networks that use different protocols, thus enabling fluid interaction between them.
Characteristics of Gateways:
- Flexibility:
Conversion of almost any Serial, Industrial Ethernet, or CAN bus protocol - Compatibility:
Connectivity with the main manufacturers in the industry - Network architecture:
Complies with the certifications of each network - Easy to configure:
Requires no programming or hardware changes - Cost reduction:
Decreases the use of blocks in the PLC and the use of ports in the rack - Ready to use:
Integration Software included and configuration examples of the most common cases
The main uses of gateways are:
- Extend a production line.
- Pass buses to Industrial Ethernet.
- Communicate two networks with each other.
- Create network segments.
- Integration with IoT, IT networks.
- Work as a firewall between two networks.

Use scenarios:
Gateway solutions connect your devices and machines to control systems, control systems to each other, and information systems (IT and/or IIoT) to devices, machines, and control systems.
- Connection of two PLCs from different manufacturers. (Siemens, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi, Beckhoff, ABB, Phoenix, etc.).

- Simple migration from fieldbus to Industrial Ethernet. An old PLC system can be readjusted and connected to a newer system, maintaining the existing I/O modules and cabling infrastructure.

- Extension of an existing production line by connecting new machines that communicate on other networks. (Profibus, Profinet, DeviceNet, Modbus RTU, ControlNet, Ethernet/IP, Interbus, Modbus TCP, EtherCAT, CAN and CANopen.).

- Creation of network segments: a network topology is divided into logical segments. Creates clear cuts between the different parts of the plant, both logical and electrical.

- Connect business systems: integrate factory data with enterprise-level systems such as SCADA, DCS, SAP, OPC, etc.
