In a previous post, I explained why the need for systems integration has emerged over the last few years within the context of digital transformation. If you would like to read the post in question: The Importance of Systems Integration.

In this post, we will focus on the importance of integrating the core system of the maintenance department. The CMMS.

Traditionally, CMMS maintenance management systems have been an information silo related to the maintenance of an organization’s assets. This information was only used by the maintenance departments and, depending on the organization, reports were extracted with certain KPIs to present the department’s performance to management.

CMMS systems were not integrated with other systems and did not have real-time data from the field. This fact limited the information available to the maintenance departments, leading to a maintenance strategy that was reactive to field events.

By working as an isolated system, they did not allow:

  • Anticipating future anomalies or breakdowns in the plant
  • Making early decisions
  • Sharing relevant data with other systems

I New Paradigms

Years ago, the fact that the CMMS was a system working in isolation did not worry organizations, nor was it a problem for the maintenance department to carry out its functions.

However, the entry of new current paradigms has changed the needs of organizations in this regard.

The increasing market competition forces organizations to be more efficient and productive. And to this end, organizations work to eliminate inefficiencies in order to reduce operating costs in all areas. In the specific case of maintenance, a possible reduction in operating costs may come from the reduction of unnecessary preventive maintenance, as well as minimizing corrective maintenance by anticipating future anomalies or breakdowns in assets. All this, of course, ensuring the optimal availability and reliability of the facilities.
