UA Libraries in the Cloud

With the recent release of version 4.27 of OPC Router, users can access the UA Cloud library via OPC Router. Developed by a working group of the OPC Foundation, the library facilitates the implementation of digital transformation and industry 4.0 projects. Our partner Inray has actively participated in this development and has greatly contributed to the final result.

What is the UA Cloud Library?

It is a central library available on the Internet where specific applications based on the OPC UA standard can be uploaded. In this way, equipment from different manufacturers can use the same data structures and their implementation is simplified. Many of these structures have been developed and published by the working groups of the OPC Foundation themselves. Experts from different sectors and applications have worked together to provide a standardized data structure for a multitude of equipment and systems. These data structures are available in the UA Cloud library and can be downloaded by users or directly by OPC clients.

How Was the UA Cloud Library Developed?

The development has been carried out in cooperation between the OPC Foundation and one of its working groups. Within these groups, experts from different industries work to improve communications via the OPC standard. In this case, the working group focused on the creation of specific applications that would allow a simple and practical implementation for a large number of cases.

Why is the UA Cloud Library Useful?

The use of the library allows you to upload and implement specific applications. These applications can be used not only by users, but also by OPC clients for their respective systems. These clients receive the data structure during configuration. In this way, they are able to use the library internally for data exchange with other systems. In addition, it is also possible to add new applications created by the users themselves and make them available in the cloud.

Who Can Use the Library?

It is more than reasonable to think that a standard data structure is used when exchanging data via OPC UA between machines in the same plant or company. Based on this standard, all machines and systems in the company can distribute, process and evaluate data in OPC UA. The UA Cloud library provides a series of data structure models that have already been created. Therefore, all types of companies, large or small, can download the data structure that is considered most appropriate and implement it to digitize data exchange. All this without the need to make their own developments or invest resources in it.

The UA Cloud library can also host its own application to be shared by the different locations of the same company worldwide. But it must be taken into account that the creation of a data structure requires many resources, so it is only recommended in the case of having a large number of machines and systems. This scenario allows companies to create their own structure, investing the necessary resources, and then publish it in the library and make it available to other plants of the same company.

OPC Router and the UA Cloud Library

OPC Router is one of the first industrial communications software capable of implementing the UA Cloud library. As simple as ever, it is only a matter of doing a “drag & drop” to have the desired data structure available.

Using the OPC Router OPC server, accessing the UA Cloud library is very simple. Once created and connected, the OPC server can provide the necessary data structures. Once the structure has been implemented in the server, it can be connected via “drag & drop”.
