Success story
Aigües De Mataró – Advanced Telecontrol
- Establish a robust telecontrol system with low maintenance, redundant communications, and adaptable to evolving needs.
- Acquire real-time information, as well as the storage, retrieval, processing, and contextualization of historical data, including monitoring of the quality of the supplied water.
- Include an early detection system for potential spills of easily managed contaminants, equipped with a notification module for on-call personnel.
- Integrate technologies with different degrees of obsolescence and performance.
- Implement a flexible architecture that requires minimal maintenance with the capacity to absorb the evolving requirements of the service.
- Deploy and maintain a high-availability communications system to replace the previous technology without negatively affecting the level of service provision.
- Solution capable of analyzing data related to water quality, as well as monitoring its evolution and diagnosis.
- Communication of the new system with a dozen drinking water reservoirs through 3G/4G mobile phone networks, residual water pumping systems, distributed networks of flow meters and rain gauges, and other devices for the control of wastewater facilities.
- Integration of a multitude of devices of different technologies, manufacturers, and degrees of obsolescence.
- Replacement of communication networks with limited bandwidth, affected by various operational problems, with other robust technologies capable of multiplying the data transfer capacity of the system.
- Creation of a public dissemination portal for relevant data concerning the distribution networks.
Aigües de Mataró is a company that belongs to the Mataró City Council, responsible for the integral management of the city’s water. Specifically, it manages the public service of supply, sanitation, and purification of water, from the collection, regulation, conduction, treatment, storage, and distribution of drinking water, as well as the collection, conduction, purification, and discharge of rainwater and wastewater.
Beyond compliance with the obligations derived from its services, Aigües de Mataró works daily to be a benchmark in the life of the city, with the commitments of the Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the horizon. An end that required, therefore, a solution aligned with the needs and expectations of citizens.
Remote Management for Greater Control and Efficiency
The differences between the technologies to be integrated were not something that paved the way. On the contrary, the different degrees of obsolescence and performance made the development of the solution a challenge. In addition, in the event of having to replace the control tool up to that point, the new communications system could not affect the service in any way.
None of the above allegations were a compelling reason to step aside. Far from it, the project evolved to find a robust, efficient, low-maintenance, and communication-redundant remote management solution.
Information for the Future
Among other actions, early detection systems for possible spills of contaminants were created. Likewise, databases and analysis tools were activated both for the current state and for its evolution and specific diagnosis.
As a bonus, the project included a public dissemination portal for relevant data on distribution networks, which has added value to the service from the perspective of the end user and increased efficiency in the management of resources and the productivity of the personnel providing the service.
