Food Packaging – Maintenance Optimization

Digitization of asset management and integration with SAP PM in seven plants in the Iberian Peninsula
Project objectives
Sector:
F&B
  • Establish a flexible, adaptable, and easy-to-use solution that meets the current needs of maintenance teams.
  • Integrate the new tool with the current corporate-level maintenance system, SAP PM, to have all the information centralized in the ERP.
Challenges
  • Overcome the complexity of integrations with SAP, usually treated as independent projects due to the multiple adaptations to be made.
  • Facilitate the exchange of the following information between both integrated systems:
    • Assets.
    • Maintenance requests.
    • Corrective, preventive, and condition-based maintenance orders and plans.
  • Implement a solution capable of adapting to the client's particular circumstances without programming or major developments.
Result
  • Modular, scalable, and user-friendly asset management (EAM) solution that adapts to the needs of the maintenance team.
  • System that covers the entire life of assets, from design, installation, and commissioning to decommissioning and removal.
  • Optimization of maintenance management with data analytics that allows for continuous improvement.
  • Reduction of operating costs, as well as MTTR, MTBF, and corrective maintenance.
  • Greater compliance with preventive maintenance.
  • Increased efficiency and control of field personnel.
Solutions and products used

The main client is a leading multinational in the production of food packaging, with a turnover of more than 25,000 million euros, with around thirty plants distributed throughout the world working non-stop 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Specifically, it has seven plants in the Iberian Peninsula, which required ensuring optimal operation of all of them, which, if not achieved, could lead to devastating losses. Therefore, it required the services of Becolve Digital to make maintenance management more flexible and agile according to the needs of the teams in charge of these functions.

Challenging Scenario: Needs to be Covered

Until now, the multinational only had SAP PM as a corporate solution for digital maintenance management. For the team in charge of this area, the tool left something to be desired in aspects such as:

  • Lack of visual planners for the proper and agile management of the thousands of work orders (WO) generated weekly.
  • Lack of a mobility tool to move around the plant and execute work orders or consult asset information (everything was done with paper).
  • Non-user-friendly environment for the working conditions and available resources, as well as for daily work.

Thus, they needed to find a solution that, integrated with the current SAP PM, would centralize all the information in the ERP.

A Leap in Modularity, Scalability, and Usability

The new asset management system (EAM) more than meets the needs of the maintenance team, with advanced functionalities such as comprehensive management of HSE work permits (health, safety, and environment). Likewise, IFS Ultimo incorporates a novel visual development tool that allows modifying screens, creating new tables and fields, and adapting the operating logic of the system.

In addition, the possibility of implementing the solution in phases was the icing on the cake that encouraged those responsible for the project to opt for IFS Ultimo. Beyond those mentioned above, the first phase included the following functions:

  • Corrective, preventive, and condition-based maintenance.
  • Human resources management.
  • Standardized planners and work plans.
  • Dashboards.
  • Reports.
  • Access and security roles.
  • Multilingual.

Today, it continues to add functionalities as new needs arise. All this, with great scalability that opens the doors to implementing the tool in more plants quickly and economically.
