Henkel is a global manufacturer of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) with more than 52,000 employees and operating in three main business units (Adhesive Technologies, Beauty Care, and Laundry & Home Care). The company seeks to promote sustainability in all its business activities, reducing its environmental footprint and improving resource efficiency in its supply chain.
Objective: to be Three Times more Efficient by 2030
Before reaching the set date, Henkel set out to create more value in the areas of social progress, health and safety, as well as in performance. Specifically, it intended to reduce its consumption of resources in terms of energy and climate, materials and waste, and water and wastewater, to limit the corporate footprint. To achieve this, it established specific objectives, such as the reduction of energy consumption and ISO 50001 certification for all its Laundry & Home Care production plants.
Energy and Environmental Management System
Once the suitcase was packed with all the goals and challenges, Henkel began its journey in 2013 towards sustainability with the implementation of a new energy monitoring system.
This system, based on AVEVA’s digital solutions, has enabled the company to integrate existing and future hardware, as well as efficiently monitor energy use, improve labeling quality, and obtain key metrics for optimizing production processes.
The results have been significant to say the least: among other benefits, the company has achieved a reduction in energy consumption of at least 16%; accumulated energy cost savings of 37 million euros, an ROI that quadrupled after eight years, and an improvement in overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of 15% in two years. Likewise, virtually all incorrect labeling has been eliminated, guaranteeing 100% quality on the production line.
Today, Henkel continues to leverage the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) and expand the AVEVA digital solution in other business units to achieve greater success in sustainability and reach the stated time limit in a big way.
