A few days ago, Checkpoint published its future predictions regarding cybersecurity, some of which are interesting:

1) New Cybernetic Cold War – A new cold war is intensifying between Eastern and Western powers. The trade war between the U.S. and China is a clear example.

2) Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure will continue to increase – These types of facilities will continue to be the target of cyberattacks. In many cases, energy or water distribution infrastructures use obsolete and vulnerable technology, given that updating implies service interruptions.

3) Lobby pressure increases to weaken privacy regulations – As new, stricter regulations appear for the protection of personal information (LOPD, GPDR, etc.), large corporations increase their efforts to request their weakening. Does the mobile device tracking news ring a bell?

3) Targeted Ransomware – There have been ransomware attacks that have been directed against specific businesses, as well as local administrations. Attackers will take their time collecting information to increase the probability of success and cause the maximum possible damage.

4) Phishing attacks beyond email – While email is the No. 1 attack vector, cybercriminals are already using other vectors to deceive the legitimate user: SMS, messages on social networks, and gaming platforms are increasingly channels where unwary users are fished.

5) Mobile Malware – a 50% increase in mobile malware to steal information from banking applications has already been observed.

6) More IoT, more risks – as 5G networks are deployed, the use of IoT devices will increase, increasing network vulnerabilities on a large scale.

7) The volume of data will increase with 5G – The bandwidth of 5G will allow the number of connected devices and sensors to increase exponentially. E-Health applications will collect data on the well-being of users, connected cars will monitor their movements, SmartCities applications will historicize data on how people live their lives. All this volume of data must be protected to avoid information leaks.

8) Artificial intelligence will accelerate cybersecurity responses by identifying new threats automatically.

9) Companies will rethink their approach to the Cloud – Some cloud availability incidents, such as the fall of Google Cloud, force companies to rethink their use and consider hybrid environments.
